Our Mission
Torgol was created to address a critical gap in the Tor network ecosystem: the difficulty of discovering and accessing legitimate .onion websites. While the Tor network provides anonymity and privacy, it lacks effective discovery mechanisms compared to the clearnet.
Our mission is to make legitimate Tor websites more discoverable, provide a safer browsing experience by filtering banned/malicious sites, create a community-driven resource where users can contribute by submitting new URLs, and offer a privacy-focused alternative to clearnet search engines.
How It Works
Our search engine crawls and indexes .onion websites across the Tor network. We analyze the content of these sites, extracting key information such as titles, headings, and descriptive text. This data is then indexed in our Meilisearch database, allowing for fast and relevant search results.
When you search, our engine queries this index and returns results ranked by relevance. We automatically filter out sites that have been flagged as malicious or banned, helping to ensure a safer browsing experience.
Privacy Focus
We are committed to privacy and security. Our search engine:
- Does not track your searches or browsing history
- Uses minimal JavaScript to reduce potential attack vectors
- Operates with a focus on performance over Tor's typically slower connections
- Provides a dark theme to be easier on users' eyes during extended sessions
- Implements responsive design to accommodate various devices
Community Contribution
We believe in the power of community. Users can contribute to our database by submitting new .onion URLs through our Submit URL page. This collaborative approach helps us build a more comprehensive index of the Tor network.
